21 Okt	REBIRTH	2	This dvd collects the last three episodes of the American cartoon series. It has no extra's and is a little expensive, as it has the same pricetag as the other Maverick cd's. But are the episodes worth it? Well, yes and no. Personally I prefer them to the Japanese Headmasters episodes, the story isn't all that, but at least there is a story. The only problems are that the animation is not the best of the series and there are way too many new characters for 3 episodes only. This is the complete fourth season of Transformers, so all new toys had to be placed in the here, as if they were always present. Headmasters Targetmasters, classic characters, they're all here. It is still a nice ending to the series. At the end Cyberytron is restored to it's golden age and we see a glimp of Galvatron and Scorponok as a warning that things aren't over yet. Unfortunately they were. I was extremely dissapointed when the endtitles began back then and the announcer told that Transformers wouldn't return, but instead they got a nice rerun of Jayce and the Wheeled warriors. All in all there can be two opinions on this thing. This dvd is worth the price, as these episodes are still fun to watch. This dvd is not worth the price, because these 3 episodes will probably eventually be put on a boxset of season 3 and, because there are no extra's and the dvd is pretty expensive. I still bought it though, because it is just nice to see these episodes in such a good quality. Front
21 Okt	FIVE FACES OF DARKNESS	2	UK and contains the five parter "Five faces of darkness", no extras. As long as the complete third season isn't available elsewhere, this is an excellent dvd. Opinions differ on these cartoons, the animation is pretty hurried and lacks a lot of quality, but the story is great! This is what I always hoped for when I watched Transformers as a kid, an explanation of the TF orgin, the destruction of Autobot headquarters, a lot of stuff happens here. There didn't seem to get an end to the story back then and it set a very different tone than what we were used to in season two. Important too, it's the follow up to the movie and just as long too. The sleeve looks a little cheaply at first sight, but it's a nice airbrushed drawing. A dvd of "Rebirth" came out at the same time too. Front
23 Sep	THE COMPLETE ORIGINAL SERIES (Deluxe edition)	2	UK. I would recommend this 4 disc set one to everyone. It has the complete first season, all 16 episodes and a lot of extras. The sleeve has new artwork and looks very luxerous. Inside the box is another flap out box that shows the four dvd's and a battle scene in four pieces All the first episodes that defined the TF mythe and were the inspiration for everything that came afterwards are here. But compared to season two it's still in it's begin stages. Season two has more different kind of stories. Season one focuses a lot on the same things; Decepticons stealing energy from power plants, most of the backgrounds consist of deserts and rocky places, not the city stuff like in s2. The background music isn't as varied either. Some of the episodes, like "Roll for it" are a drag to watch back after all these years. Most of the time the Autobots are just waiting for someone to shoot them down and a lot of stuff happens that makes you think "why didn't he do that?". But, it's still classic Transformers and very entertaining. The extra's; It has the first episodes of "Five faces of darkness"and "Rebirth" as a promotion for those two dvd's. Character profiles of some of the main characters. Bumpers and adverts, a nice extra. The adverts focus mainly on the years 1988-1990 and have some good animation that made you wish for a cartoon of that era. I think the older commercials are lost, as they are replaced by Japanese ones for Soundwave for example. A classic advert for Optimus Prime can be seen on the BBC footage on the Movie dvd though. The bumpers have some nice animation too, I'd never seen those before, as Sky channel used to broadcast the episodes without commercials. Classic quotes are some pointless extractions of some cartoons. The fan art gallary is what it says, a nice touch. The quiz is cool too, after you answer some questions you get to see rare footage, in this case three. The first two are compilations of Ultra Magnus and a general compilation that were shown at the a lot at the end of season 3, the third footage is the best though. It shows a (at first sight) real car waiting next to a busy road, suddenly the doors pop open and it transforms into an Autobot. This is some very slick cgi animation. The original scripts extras only work on a cd rom drive and I don't have one. As last there's the Japanese trailer for the movie, that should have been put on the movie discd, but I think this is just a way to promote the other Maverick dvd's too. A It has some nice unseen footage of the movie. I wonder why they cut some of the stuff out anyway, the story could use some more beefing up and it was very short already.. I think this dvd will appeal to most TF collectors. Even if it only was so that you could throw away all those old vhs tapes that you've collected over the years, like I did. I even had some betamax tapes. The Dutch magazine DVD Report had an review for this in their March 2003 issue. Though this dvd set is still not that easy to get here. 26 Aug	TRANSFORMERS TAKARA	2	UK , Has the first 6 episodes of the Japanese Headmasters series. Contains the episodes the episodes 'Four Soldiers From The Sky', 'The Tale Of The Master Star', 'The Birth Of A New Leader', 'The Resurrected Billy Against The Decepticons', 'The Revolt On PLanet Pistoll' and 'The Evil Meteor'. The cover art has a character from Victory , because the main titles are from Victory too. The cartoons are pretty bad . The animation isn't that good and it seems they're quikly translated with completely different voice actors and a lot of the names are wrong. It's not that you need this translation to understand most of the episodes, as there isn't really much of a storyline. These first episodes are ok, but the further you go into the season , it gets a little boring. In these first episodes a lot of important stuff happens; Optimus prime dies again, Rodimus Prime leaves, Soundwave and Blaster get killed (a very dramatic fight, even Galvatron is touched for a moment!) and Cybertron gets blown up (!). But this is all to clear the way for the Headmasters stories. Most of the other episodes are just the Autobots waiting for a Destron attack, a fight happens , Daniel saves the day and the story ends. These episodes are for the diehard TF fans only. They're ok to watch once, but nothing more. It's still very cool that these are finally available legally and I'm very curious at more volumes though, especially the much better cartoons like Victory and Masterforce!
